Grow New Plants
United States
Приєднався 5 вер 2019
I grow and propagate plants, trees and shrubs. I do this at my home. I am building a 12' x 16" greenhouse in my backyard that I should have finished by this fall. I propagate all kinds of trees, shrubs and ornamental grasses. I use Rootmaker products with most of my plants to give my pants good fibrous root systems. I also grow African Violets, sinningias and a few other tropical plants inside on grow shelfs with LED grow lights. I have been in the landscaping industry for most of my life and have previously had a tree farm where I grew trees and landscape shrubs. I love creating new plants and trees from seed and by cuttings. I hope you will follow along with me on my journey!
Grow Black Walnut Trees Update
I planted Black Walnut Trees from seed in Rootmaker root pruning pots 3 months ago. These Black Walnuts were collected last fall and stored and I plant them using my seed mix with Micronutrients and fertilizer. I took the Black Walnut tree seedlings and transplanted them into Rootmaker 1 gallon pots using my transplant soil with my new Rootmaker 8 Fertilizer.

Could you graft a pecan onto a black walnut??
You probably could but not sure, would be just as easy to graft to a native pecan, I have several bigger pecans I’m going to attempt to graft next spring
@@GrowNewPlants wish I could find someone to graft my Hickory tress into pecan and help me move my fence line Native pecans into my pasture. I have a ton of pecan trees I can’t harvest around.
Thank you for being so generous with your sharing of information. It's much appreciated.
My Uncle had huge Black walnut trees he planted in Kasota, MN (near Mankato, MN). He was really a woodworker, with a shop. He wanted to use the wood for projects. Never got to it. when we went to see him, the nuts always seemed like a nuisance (Thanksgiving?) as a young kid, all around his driveway. Anyway, enjoying the programming..
The nuts are big and can be messy, but it is a beautiful tree! Thank you!
Nice looking trees
They are cool trees,, Thanks for watching!
If a jm is red it needs sun to stay the red color. In the shade they will green up faster
LSU AG center has some good UA-cam videos about different fig varieties.
I will have to check that out, Thank You
I had success with cuttings from my fig tree, too.
Thats Great!!
Is that called Mycelium? I called about that once to garden stores, they were clueless.. Whatever gives you an advantage. Anyway, see if it works! I'm on the list! :)
Maybe you mean Mycorrhizae, it’s a supplement that stimulates rooting, not in here, I use a product called Great White with my African violets though
@@GrowNewPlants yeah, that's what I meant! They didn't have a clue, wasn't in a bag. They talked about Green Frog potting soil. I'm so out of it, i shouldn't comment. But like your work.
Will have to try this
I'm excited about having the micronutrients in my mix now!
I have trouble getting the plant to set back in the pot without the leaves or stem buried. I also thought that you weren't supposed to pack in the soil.
They did good
Yes They did, Thanks for watching
I can't find an email for you. You did a video on rose seeds 3 years ago. In it, you said you would update the following spring as to what happened. Lots of people have asked for that followup but no one can find the video. Maybe you could an update?
I posted in the comments on that video, Unfortunately I had a mix up with seeds and lost those seeds so I was never able to plants them, I am going to try and get another pod and try again,,, Sorry
What time of year did you plant those seeds? How often did you water em?
Another great video. How often and for how long do you water your seedlings when they're in the seed trays?
Earlier in the summer, once a day, As hot as it is in Texas now, they are watered by the irrigation system for 6 minutes twice a day,,then maybe twice a week I will water deep by hand,,,Its getting to 100 degrees everyday here though
Can I plant in July? Or is it too late?
You can, just have to keep them moist all the time, The heat will help them germinate quicker, just can't let the soil dry out.
Great video, but I can’t find your follow up video. Why would you propagate in soil for a month, if they sprout roots in water in only two weeks?
wouldnt it be better to propagate them longer?
are the trees been in the root make for a year or more
Did it work? I bought some yellow yucca which isn't as common and I'm trying to learn how to grow them.
I have a cypress tree, and I know you have a video about planting the seeds from your tree. My question is how to collect the seeds. The seed hull is green now. What should I do with it?
The whole cone just crushes and becomes seeds once the become dark brown and brittle and ripe. If you are talking about the big southern American cypress and not the Italian cypress. The cones will very easily crush under your fingers when ready.
If you ever visit Washington DC, take the time to go to the NATIONAL CEMENTARY and make the walk up to the TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER. ALONG THE WALK, THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT OAK TREES THAT SHED ACORNS. THE ACORNS VARY IN SIZE FROM ROUND AS A MARBLE TO GIANT ACORNS AS BIG AS THE FINGER NAIL UP TO THE FIRST JOINT OF YOUR THUMB. ANOTHER ONE WAS LONG (ABOUT 1.5 inches long) AND SKINNEY ABOUT THE DIAMETER OF MY LITTLE FINGER and those are the ones I really found unusual and put in my coat pocket. There were many more. PS. If you visit the US CAPITAL building and grounds CHECK OUT THE GINKO BILOBA TREE STRUCTURE. THE TREES ON THE CAPITAL GROUNDS WERE ALL GIVEN TO THE US GOVERNMENT BY OTHER FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS.
That sounds great, Might have to make a field trip!
Can the transplants overwinter inside? Could you try to grow roots in water from the ones whose roots were torn off? Thanks for the video. I just discovered these plants and want to make a border in one of my beds but they are pretty pricey.
They would overwinter inside, the would survive a normal winter outside or unless you live in an extreme winter area, you could keep them in a garage for the winter. Just be sure and water them occasionally. Don't know if they would grow roots in water,,wouldn't hurt to give it a try though!
You can do it! Bed time for Bonzo buddy! Night~!
:)
Glad to see you upload again!
Thanks!!
Do you think it make that much difference?
Yes I do, I will do some experiments with it soon to see for sure.
Buna ziua cu ce le fertilizati
Looking for an update video. How did these turn out? Thank you. 😊
Success rate? How long to root?
will post an update on these soon
@GrowNewPlants : Were you able to grow the seeds? 😊
It’s a shame you cut so much of that plant. Wet your soil before you fill your cells. Then fill your tray half way with water and water from the bottom. I never water from the top. That way the seed or cuttings are not disturbed.
Plant is totally fine… watering from the top or the bottom makes no difference as long as you are careful during each application. I’ve cut plants and cuttings back way more than that.
Any update on how these trees are doing now? Have you planted them in the ground yet?
What kind of soil?
How big are they now please
Did you do a follow-up for this video?
This is how I got my 2 pecan trees. I was sent to clean gutters at a grocery store and found a few lager seeds with roots one ha sprouted. I took 3 home 1 got eaten soon by snails. The other 2 hadn’t sprouted so I put them in 5 gallon pots. Not I have 2 little 12” trees. And wanted to know how to care for them and I came across your 4 year old pecan planting video. The gutters were full of tree seedlings like yours here except 1000x more. Perfect growing wet mulch.
Did you make a grafting video for the pecans. I’ve watched everything I can find on your channel. I saw the update to the 1 gallon pot video. But wanted to see the grafting process. Thanks
I live in tx..son in law got me some green pods of a plant by his work.I kept them outside in a folders coffee container...it took a couple weeks, but the pods turned brown.I brought them in and broke open the pods..Black seeds !.I have a bag of potting soil and saved a store bought lettuce container with a lid.I put the potting soil about half way up in the container, wetting it as I wax adding soil..made it moist but not muddy.Took some of the seeds and put them on the soil,pu some soil on top,,gave it a bit if water and put the lid on.I put some little holes in the bottom of the container and a couple on the lid..put the whole thing in a plastic bowl I use for leftovers. I have it outside in direct sun but I'm going to put it on the table by my front door so it won't be in direct sun but still warm..first time doing this..fingers crossed !
typically its best to let the seeds ripen on the plant or tree. With these the pod turns brown and cracks open. The seeds will be black when fully ripened so they may work. If they don't, just collect some later in the year when they are ripe. Good Luck!!
I could do this really. I remember your videos regarding oak seeds. They are in the understory, or an acorn started in a mashed up tarp. we have mostly burr oak, or red oak. A lot of people are like, oh that takes YEARS, skip it!
They will grow pretty fast if you take care of them, burr oak is one of my favorites,,planned on growing another crop next year!!
whats the difference between a shumard red oak and a northern red oak?
From what I have read, they are very similar, but as the name says, the northern red oak is more native to farther north, the Shumard is considered a southern red oak. Best advice I can give for red oaks is see what grow wild in your area and that will tell you that variety would be a good choice.
They are pretty big for just two months, they look nice
Thanks, They did good!
I think the Rose of Sharon is a loverly compliment to the garden I have one which is over 20yrs old and it has yellow petals and thanks for for your advice on showing us how to take cuttings you also have very good patience.
I planted green bean seeds that I bought in 2014 and got 85% germination!
That’s great! I think I’m going to try some tomatoes next
Thanks DALLAS! Can you make Worcestershire sauce with those? Sort of a dumb question, I suppose? Neat video, very professional. and It's amazing what you can grow, if once you put you mind up to it!!
Thanks, Not sure about worcestershire sauce, I make a FINADENE SAUCE, which is a souped up soy sauce for chines food!
Root systems were huge! Nice job!
The rootmaker pots really work, Thanks!
Very cool video looking for an update on your channel. Good job brother.
Never filmed an update on these but both trees are about six feet tall and almost identical, so end result is you could use either one and get the same result.
@@GrowNewPlants thanks for posting, I'm getting some of these.
Where can I get a few of those trays? $185 is all I can find
i am working on something with Rootmaker right now, will get back to you soon.

Wow, didn’t know you could grow hibiscus from cuttings. I’ll have to try this. Thank you.
Yes, and they are looking great so far, no wilting of leaves, hopefully have some roots to show in a month or so!
Wow! They rooted fast
Yes, I was very excited how well they did
Good Pecans float or sink?l in water??
good ones will sink after about 24 hours, this test is a good indicator with pecans but not as accurate as it is with oaks.
Thanks soooooo much! This is EXACTLY what was looking for!
Great, Glad it helped, Just did another video on these too if you would like to watch it ua-cam.com/video/QfX93AJHmrg/v-deo.html
@@GrowNewPlantsthanks! I bought a $5 plant at Lowe’s and was able to get four little plants from it!
